Best Radio Station Format Change (Alternative Division)

KPNT (105.7 FM) The Point

In the 1990s the music gods created Pearl Jam's Ten, Nirvana's Nevermind and Alice in Chains' Dirt. And it was good. But the gods giveth and the gods shelveth away: St. Louis' main alternative-rock station, the Point (105.7 FM), forsook much of that decade's fantastic music in favor of new releases from trendy bands—and banishing the earlier stuff to far-too-infrequent, so-called Way Back weekends. (A pox on them!) But the Point finally saw the error of its ways and is now embodying the new slogan, "Everything Alternative." Forgotten gems from bands such as Filter, the Refreshments and Nada Surf (along with the occasional spin of tunes by Bob Marley, Billy Idol and Johnny Cash) have resurrected this station, much to the elation of listeners who graduated from high school between 1990 and 2000. In fact, Eddie, Kurt and Layne sound as fresh today as they did when their groundbreaking records were first released —and when placed side-by-side with some of today's music, it's evident how much of what happened long ago influences what's called "new" today.
