Through the Eyes of a Child, Historyonics Theatre Company

Historyonics' Through the Eyes of a Child was a warm celebration and elegy of St. Louis's historically African-American neighborhoods (the Ville, East St. Louis, Carr Square and Kinloch) and how they changed "from a place to a place to be from." Interviewer Gwendolyn Moore spoke to people who grew up in these neighborhoods between the 1940s and 1980s, and playwright Lee Patton Chiles stitched a tapestry from these disparate recollections of social mores, family life, employment opportunities and race relations. For an ongoing project blending multiple voices and different experiences into a short dramatic work, Through the Eyes of a Child was remarkably taut and thoroughly enjoyable.
