Global Farms

There is a resurgence of community gardens and co-op farms reclaiming the forsaken land of the post-industrial age, but what sets Global Farms apart are the people who work the soil. They're immigrants, mostly refugees, who want to make a living here in the United States as farmers. Produce from the fruit trees and vegetable patches is sold at farmers' markets around town, and it helps to offset the cost of the program, which is sponsored by the International Institute. Those who wish to continue farming after completion of the program are eligible for loans to buy land of their own to work as they please. It is a model of self-sufficiency and determination — a verdant manifestation of the American Dream nestled between the brick two-family flats and warehouses in the lovely Botanical Heights neighborhood.
