Big River Hurricane Relief Concert

Thursday, December 29; The Sheldon Concert Hall (3648 Washington Boulevard)

Pianist Peter Martin, one of a number of University City natives who have developed flourishing jazz careers after moving to New Orleans, is serving as music director for this hurricane relief concert, and he's put together a stellar lineup that includes his current employer (vocalist Dianne Reeves) and fellow St. Louis expatriates Neal Caine on bass, Jeremy Davenport on trumpet and pianist Tom McDermott. Also on the bill are some of New Orleans' finest players, including Ellis Marsalis (pianist, teacher and patriarch of jazz's first family); saxophonists Wess Anderson and Victor Goines; trumpeter Nicholas Payton; drummer Herlin Riley; and banjo and guitar player Don Vappie. Expect feature numbers for each of the musicians in turn, as well as a helping of traditional New Orleans jazz favorites. Proceeds will benefit the Higher Ground Hurricane Relief Fund and Oxfam America's Hurricane Katrina Response and Recovery Fund.
