The folks behind the Urban Assault Ride live by a simple philosophy: "There are few problems the bike can’t solve." And while bicycles can't fix the United States' credit rating or lower the temperature, they can save money, improve the air quality and make you look better in a swimsuit. For this eccentric, scavenger hunt-type ride, teams of two bicyclists are given a list of stops where they will find obstacle courses. If you're picturing a triathlon, think again -- the obstacles are more likely to involve Slip N' Slides and Big Wheels than incredible feats of strength. Teams must defeat the obstacle before resuming their ride, and each team can determine their own route for completing the course, which is about 25 miles. The starting line and finish line are both at Langenberg Field in Forest Park (near the tennis courts), and the race begins at 9 a.m. Your $60 registration fee (www.urbanassaultride.com/stlouis) gets you an event t-shirt, Clif Bars and other snacks, plus plenty of New Belgium beer at the post-race party. Even if you don't ride, you can attend the party and purchase beers for the benefit of St. Louis BicycleWorks.
