Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears

8 p.m. Sunday, June 27. Off Broadway, 3509 Lemp Avenue.

Pinpointing the birth of the soul revival is a mug's game, especially given that veterans such as Bettye LaVette and Solomon Burke have barely slowed down since their '60s salad days and continue to set the pace for the kids. Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears are as young as the revivalists get — and as wild and charismatic as any band on the circuit. The Austinites take their James Brown-inspired grooves into the garage, retool the rhythms for maximum punch, spray the breaks with west-side-Chicago blues guitar and turn the funk up to eleven. The band's 2009 debut, Tell 'Em What Your Name Is!, remains a raunchy, bracing and in-the-pocket listen. For this long overdue headlining show (rescheduled from the spring) dancing, sweating and rocking your ass will not be optional.
