King Henry VI of England was born in the shadow of his great father, Henry V. Dad had reconquered France and made England stronger than it had been in years. Henry VI was a more peaceful sort, accustomed to trusting his regent and advisers (he came to the throne at nine months old). In time that softness and trust lost France and allowed his noble kinsmen Lancaster and York to rend the kingdom in two while Henry languished in a stupor and his determined wife, Margaret, attempted to guide the kingdom to peace. Shakespeare chronicled the life of Henry VI across three dramas packed with power players vying for the future of two countries. St. Louis Shakespeare commissioned Sarah Whitney to adapt the trilogy into a single work, Blood Reigns: The War of the Roses Trilogy, which opens this Friday. Game of Thrones ain't got nothing on this.
