Whenever a classic rock band is in need of material, all it needs to do is pull from the tried-and-true trifecta of life on the road/easy women/self-reflection. Songs from Bob Seger's catalogue indeed examine all of these things, but in a way that suggests he invented and holds the rights to all three. A singer who carries the grit of Detroit in the back of his throat, Seger happily still sounds like, well, himself on Face the Promise, his first release in eleven years. He's a perfect classic-rock icon, a singer who doesn't tinker with his style and doesn't have to: He got it right the first time, decades ago. In fact, he's the everyman next door who pours his life into his music (and who you'd gladly pour a beer), and his stories only improve with time.
