8 p.m. Saturday, August 14. The Firebird, 2706 Olive Street.

Make no bones about it: The Japanese take their heavy metal seriously. The perfect example? Boris. The long-running Japanese metal band finally broke through stateside thanks to the help of tastemaking label Southern Lord, which began reissuing the band's extensive catalog in 2001, culminating in the release of 2008's Smile. Since then the quartet has been a live staple in America, whether it's winning over huge crowds at the Pitchfork Music Festival or as an opener for Nine Inch Nails. And like fellow Japanese groups Mono and Envy, Boris is without a doubt one of the loudest live bands you'll likely ever witness. Although we always recommend wearing earplugs to shows, in this case, you might wanna pick up a pair of air traffic controller headphones or something.
