John Rutter's Magnificat, inspired of course by Bach's Magnificat, is a popular piece for orchestra and chorus, especially at Christmastime. But don't let the exuberance and beauty of the music overwhelm the humble, central tenet of the piece: "to remember His promise of mercy." The line, part of the canticle for the Blessed Virgin Mary that inspired Bach's composition, is worth contemplating regardless of one's religious affiliation. A little mercy goes a long way, at this time of year or any other. The Bach Society of Saint Louis performs Rutter's Magnificat as part of its annual Candlelight Concert at 7:30 p.m. this evening at Powell Symphony Hall (718 North Grand Boulevard; 314-652-2224 or Tickets are $20 to $60.
