Building A Visual Language

Photographer Julius Shulman spread the aesthetics of mid-century California Modernism to the world at large; in doing so, he elevated the commercial field of architectural photography into an art form. Shulman's photographs of buildings designed by Richard Neutra, Frank Lloyd Wright, Charles Eames and Eero Saarinen were hailed as both time specific and timeless, revealing the relationship between the individual building and its environment, as well as displaying the optimism of the Modernist movement. The photographer came by it naturally, as he was himself a lively and vital man. Eric Bricker's documentary, Visual Acoustics: The Modernism of Julius Shulman, features the artist talking about his work and his life, and showcases many of his most famous (and beautiful) subjects. Visual Acoustics screens at 7:30 p.m. Friday through Sunday (January 29 through 31) at the Moore Auditorium on Webster University's campus (470 East Lockwood Avenue; 314-968-7487 or www.webster.edu/filmseries).
