Cajun Craws and Parading Paws

While you can indeed take in the sights and sounds of Soulard year round, the Taste of Soulard is best savored this Saturday and Sunday (February 10 and 11). Between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m., wayfarers can sample signature dishes from the créme de la créme of the neighborhood's renowned "taste-it-or-get-wasted" establishments. Ticket books (containing six food-sample tickets and one drink-sample ticket) are $20 and may be purchased at any of the participating restaurants and pubs.

And on Sunday, don't plan on toting a doggie bag at the Taste, because you'll find plenty of four-legged friends on hand to lap up any leftovers. The fourteenth annual Barkus Parade steps off from the intersection of Menard Street and Allen Avenue at 1 p.m. and then proceeds toward Soulard Market Park, where five dogs will be crowned (King, Queen, Prince, Princess and Jester) in a Canine Coronation Ceremony at 2 p.m. Costumes for humans and pups alike are strongly encouraged. Registration is $10 for paraders (the money goes to the Open Door Animal Sanctuary); enjoying the parade is free. For more information visit
