Cheers to Highland!

This Illinois town will be glad you came

As the song asks, "Wouldn't you like to get away?" Well, of course you would, but you shouldn't just head down to the corner bar (where everybody knows your name); you need to get out of town — even though you're broke. Well, do you have enough gas in your tank to drive approximately 70 miles roundtrip to Highland, Illinois? Good — start driving! And why are you making the trip to this small town just a smidge northeast of St. Louis? For a Weekend Art Getaway, that's why! This event, which runs from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday (August 5 and 6), features all kinds of free fun, including live music, kids' activities and a local-arts expo. There's even a sidewalk-chalk Street Art Festival, where artists transform the streets around Highland's historic downtown square (907 Main Street) into their canvases — and all for your enjoyment. For more information about the Weekend Art Getaway, call 618-654-3721 or visit And if you happen to have $7 to $9 in your pocket when you get to Highland, stop by the Highland Upper Elementary School (1800 Lindenthal Avenue) for Hard Road Theatre Productions' performances of Grease at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday and at 2 p.m. on Sunday; visit for more about that.
Sat., Aug. 5; Sun., Aug. 6
