Chillin' First-Glass

It's cool when it's hot

There's nothing like being in front of a live furnace during a St. Louis summer — not even a sweat lodge could compare. Fortunately, at the Third Degree Glass Factory (5200 Delmar Boulevard), the glass furnaces are located inside the delightfully air-conditioned building, so during events like tonight's Third Friday, you can keep cool while watching fantastic glass-blowing demonstrations (from 6 to 10 p.m.). This evening's free affair also features a special sneak-peek performance of Union Avenue Opera's Carmen from 7 to 7:30 p.m., and at 8 p.m. the Valerie Tichacek Trio supplies a jazzy ambiance for your heat-escapist pleasure. Plus, you can sample A. Bommarito wines and check out Jon Biscan's new glass pieces (one of which is pictured) and Three Degrees of Spiral by Gen Obata, a collection of mystical quilts, paintings and drawings; both exhibits remain on view in the gallery through Tuesday, September 16. For more information about the monthly event, call Third Degree at 314-367-4527 or visit www.stlglass.com.
