Sometimes, the closest we get to courtroom drama is wondering whether we'll be selected for a jury -- and then seated next to a guy who smells like Funyuns and willfully misunderstands the concept of "personal space." That's not a real drama. It's a minor inconvenience, and it has nothing on the story that unfolds in Nuts. Tom Topor's play fearlessly takes on issues of sex work, crime, mental health and legal fairness. Pricey call-girl Claudia Faith Draper faces trial for murdering a violent john. The state wants to prove that she's mentally unfit to stand trial, but a series of testimonies help Claudia convince the judge that she is legally sane. The St. Louis Actors' Studio opens its new season with Nuts at 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and at 2 p.m. Sunday (October 7 through 23) at the Gaslight Theater (358 North Boyle Avenue; 314-458-2968 or Tickets are $20 to $25.
Thursdays-Sundays. Starts: Oct. 7. Continues through Oct. 23, 2011
