Cultural Exchange

The cultural roots of the world's great civilizations are best expressed through art. Whether through a meaningful painting or a revelatory epic poem, art allows cultures to share their pride, their hope and their intellect. Such is certainly the case with the St. Louis Indian Dance Festival 2011, a three-day celebration (Friday, April 15, through Sunday, April 17), of India's many beautiful dance forms. Presented by Soorya Performing Arts with the support of the Missouri Arts Council and the Regional Arts Commission, this festival introduces attendees to classical and folk dances from India. Friday's performance begins at 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium of Clayton High School (1 Mark Twain Circle, Clayton), with additional performances Saturday at 4 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m. The festival grants the rare opportunity to see many internationally renowned dancers under one roof — performers hail from Chicago's Natya Dance Theatre and San Jose's Abhinaya Dance Company, as well as from points all across the globe. General seating tickets are $10 per day; a $25 VIP ticket nets you up-close seating as well as dinner. For more information, call 314-397-5278 or send an e-mail to
