Daddy Care Day

Get Pops off the couch and down to Father's Day Field Day at the Butterfly House

"We've got to get Dad away from the barbecue pit and the TV on Father's Day, get him out doing something," says Amy Hammonds, spokeswoman for the Sophia M. Sachs Butterfly House and Education Center. "Mother's Day is very typical: Have brunch, and everyone goes out, but Father's Day is usually Dad just sitting at home. We want to get him out! Have a field day!"

So c'mon, dads: Do something different this Father's Day. Don't just watch sports, participate in some! Grab the family and head over to the Butterfly House in Faust Park (15193 Olive Boulevard) for a Father's Day Field Day jam-packed with stuff to do.

Dads and kids can show off their spirals in the football throw or check their strike-zone accuracy in the baseball throw. But if these sports events sound too run-of-the-mill for your family, the Butterfly House will have some less- traditional events in which Dad's long-gone skills won't matter as much. Families can test their aim trying to hit a floating target with a giant slingshot, or they can hop along in an old-fashioned potato-sack race, which is always hilariously frustrating fun. There will also be trekking-ski races, in which dad and child have to use communication and teamwork in order to propel themselves along faster than the other dad-and-child teams. How's that for a competition-filled bonding activity?

Prizes will be awarded in all of the events, but what better prize could there be than bull's-eyeing Dad's face with a platter full of whipped cream? We had no idea the Butterfly House was that cool.

The activities run from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. Sunday, June 20, and all of the festivities are included with regular admission to the Butterfly House ($6 for adults, $4.50 for seniors, $4 for ages 4 to 12, and kids 3 and younger get in free).
