Conventional ideas of dance often confine the art form to a delicate, pretty package. While some dance performances certainly fit in that space, others are loud, exuberant and bold, offering outside-the-box movement and encouraging creative thinking among dancers. Outburst, the upcoming concert by the Modern American Dance Company (MADCO), provides the latter experience. Under the guidance of company executive and artistic director Stacy West, MADCO dancers were tasked with presenting a peek inside their own creative minds as they developed personal pieces for the performance. Dancers/choreographers Claire Hilleren, Vance Baldwin, Monica Alunday and others delivered on the challenge, and they present their dynamic works enhanced by striking costumes at the Touhill Performing Arts Center on the University of Missouri-St. Louis campus (One University Drive at Natural Bridge Road). Outburst is staged at 8 p.m. Friday and at 2 and 8 p.m. Saturday (September 14 and 15), though it should be noted that the afternoon performance is an hourlong, shortened show. Tickets cost $10 to $25; call 314-516-4949 or visit www.touhill.org to make a purchase.
Fri., Sept. 14, 8 p.m.; Sat., Sept. 15, 2 & 8 p.m., 2012
