Dancing Queens and Kings

Sometimes Ms. Day just gets that feeling, and she simply can't suppress it. No, it's not the urge to get in the car and drive, drive, drive away from it all — though that desire crops up from time to time, too — it's the feeling that she just has to dance. Right. Now. She suspects she will be overcome by such an inclination as she cheers on the dancers participating in the St. Louis Area Dance Marathon in the Rec Gym on the campus of Washington University (Forsyth and Skinker boulevards; specific directions and more information can be found at www.dmstl.org/forvisitors). Visitors such as Day are invited to check out the proceedings from 4 p.m. Saturday, November 7, to 2 a.m. Sunday, November 8, and provide support for the folks who are dancing for twelve straight hours. Day can also try to win plane tickets, among other prizes, in the event's raffle, and she can take solace in the fact that proceeds from the raffle and the $5 visitor admission fee benefit the Children's Miracle Network of Greater St. Louis. In addition to all of the dancers who signed up and got their teams together by Wednesday, October 7, groups such as Wash. U.'s break-dancing and salsa clubs will also perform throughout the event. And you never know: Day might break into a spontaneous sprinkler move or grocery-cart dance out of the pure joy of charity!
