Debut and You

Five plays, three days, one winner

Often theater is a study of the tried and true. People who love the performing art will see the same plays again and again just to check out how a particular company puts the show together. And there's certainly nothing wrong with that. But for the art form to survive, it must grow and evolve. That's where HotCity Theatre comes in. This local company has organized the third annual GreenHouse New Play Festival during which five brand-new scripts-in-progress will be given staged readings throughout the weekend (Friday through Sunday, June 27 through 29) — and one will be chosen for a full-scale show in 2009. The competition kicks off at 8 p.m. on Friday with Lauren Dusek's Intelligent Life, about alien hunters and their intriguing find, and continues Saturday with plays presented at 6 and 8:30 p.m. and on Sunday with readings at 2 and 4:30 p.m. The grand finale happens during the rooftop reception at 7 p.m. on Sunday night when the fest's winner is announced. This weekend of theater goes down at the Centene Center for Arts & Education (3547 Olive Street), and believe it or not, admission is free! Learn more about the selected works and the festival by calling 314-289-4060 or visiting www.hotcitytheatre.org.
