Young Mary, the only survivor of a cholera outbreak in Colonial India, is sent to live with her uncle Archibald in Yorkshire. Archibald is a depressed and reclusive man since his wife, Lily, died, and he leaves Mary to explore his estate with the maid, Martha, and her slightly nutty brother, Dickon. The three discover that the estate has more than a few secrets tucked away in its expanse. The first is Colin, Archibald's son, who is kept locked up because Archibald is afraid to lose him; the second is an overgrown, labyrinthine garden that Mary wants to reclaim and revive. In doing so, Mary helps both Archibald and Colin overcome their grief, while also coming to terms with her own loss. Frances Hodgson Burnett's The Secret Garden is proof that gardening is good for the soul.
