Don't Call Him A Hobbit

Ron Howard first worked with George Lucas as an actor in Lucas' first big hit, American Graffiti. The two teamed up again for Willow, with Howard directing from a story by Lucas. Willow was conceived as a sword and sorcery franchise in the hopes of repeating Star Wars' success, but the film was not the blockbuster its producers were anticipating, coming in well behind the year's biggest hits like Rain Man, Die Hard and Crocodile Dundee II. Starring current Life's Too Short star Warwick Davis as the title character, Willow is the story of a baby who will grow up to save the kingdom, with Willow and swordsman Madmartigan (Val Kilmer) trying to keep her alive long enough to fulfill her destiny. Willow screens at midnight on Friday and Saturday (May 17 and 18) as part of the Reel Late Series at the Tivoli Theatre (6350 Delmar Boulevard, University City; Admission is $8.
