Drink to Love

If making someone fall truly in love was as easy as having them ingest a magic potion, we'd all be under the influence -- and probably in prison. But Opera Theatre of St. Louis explores the idea in its production of Gaetano Donizetti's The Elixir of Love. The comic opera focuses on Nemorino (rising star Rene Barbera), a young man who tries using a love potion to win a girl's heart but is perplexed when she becomes engaged to his nemesis. The message here is that sometimes the best influence to be under is your own, but it might take an external agent to help you figure that out. Love potion No. 9, indeed. The Elixir of Love is performed in English with projected supertitles at 8 p.m. Saturday, May 31, at the Loretto-Hilton Center on Webster University's campus (130 Edgar Road; 314-961-0644 or www.opera-stl.org). Tickets are $25 to $125. Six more performances occur in repertory through Wednesday, June 25.
Sat., May 31, 8 p.m.; Wed., June 4, 8 p.m.; Fri., June 6, 8 p.m.; Sun., June 8, 7 p.m.; Thu., June 12, 8 p.m.; Wed., June 25, 1 p.m., 2014
