Drink Up the Delicious Cabaret

Four nights, four shows

Ms. Day just loves a good cabaret performance. The remarkable voices, the song choices, the theatrical spirit of the night — what's not to adore, really? When she sees a spectacular show that succeeds on all of these levels, she just can't wait to go back for more. But in our town, she usually does have to cool her heels. For a while. And that's certainly no fun. Cabaret can be hard to find — except when the St. Louis Cabaret Conference comes around. This annual event is produced by Tim Schall, a cabaret performer himself, and it includes workshops and nightly performances at the Bistro at Grand Center (3536 Washington Boulevard), which means that from Thursday through Sunday (August 14 through 17), cabaret will be in the air! At 8:30 p.m. on Thursday night, eleven alumni of the conference do it up right ($15 at the door), and then at 8:30 p.m. on Friday, Schall himself gets his voice heard ($20). Saturday evening sees Jason Graae and Lina Koutrakos (pictured) onstage at 8:30 p.m. ($35) — both have won many awards, and they serve as two of the instructors for the cabaret classes this year — and at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, the conference students will show off what they've learned ($15 at the door). Friday- and Saturday-night tickets can be purchased through MetroTix (314-534-1111 or; visit for more information.
