Earle of the Arts

The term "Renaissance man" gets bandied about far too freely these days, leading us to believe that every fella who can boil an egg and recognize a few lines of Robert Frost deserves the distinction. That diminishes the phrase's meaning for the real Renaissance men out there — like Steve Earle. Acclaimed musician, accomplished writer and outstanding actor (he was awesome as Walon on The Wire), Earle infuses his body of work with his Southern sensibilities and his political passion. Tonight, the multifaceted man comes to town as Author Steve Earle and will be signing copies of his brand-new novel I'll Never Get Out of This World Alive. Taking its title from a Hank Williams tune, the book is part music history, part magical realism, part redemption story. Meet Earle this evening at the St. Louis Public Library's Schlafly Branch (225 North Euclid Avenue) at 7 p.m. as part of the Authors @ Your Library series. And don't rush out to buy a copy of I'll Never Get Out of This World Alive beforehand — if you buy the book at the event, you'll be supporting local indie heroes Subterranean Books, who are supplying the copies.
