For ten Septembers, Dawn Karlovsky has taken dance to the people by performing site-specific pieces in public places during the lunch hour with Dine on Dance. The tradition continues at noon Friday, September 20, at Strauss Park (Grand Boulevard and Washington Avenue) and again at noon on Friday, September 27, at Market in the Loop (6655 Delmar Boulevard, University City). Site-specific in this instance means that the peculiarities of the environment are incorporated into the dances. So, that round, flat-topped cement platform in the middle of the Market in the Loop may become a temporary stage, a launch pad or kinetic scenery. Same goes for Strauss Park -- those trees and the fence are all in play. Guest choreographer/dancers joining Karlovsky & Company Dance this year include Hannahbeth Fischer, Janele Oros and Monica Newsam (who is known for her aerial dance magic; look out, trees).
