Eight Is Great

Those of us who love it will argue that the guitar is the most beautiful of all instruments. Limitless in its expressive capabilities, portable, infinitely adaptable — the guitar is sonic bliss. While the six-string model of course is the norm, most listeners have at least a passing acquaintance with the twelve-string, though the tonal and harmonic differences between the two couldn't be starker (no one's going to mistake, say, a perfect, tart Chet Atkins lick on the former for a Roger McGuinn skyscraping journey on the latter). But did you know there's an eight-stringed variant? Raphaella Smits is a master of it; she'll be showing you why at 8 p.m. tonight at her local debut at the St. Louis Ethical Society (9001 Clayton Road, Richmond Heights; 314-991-0955). The eight-string has a ravishing, nearly symphonic tone and Ms. Smits is its conductor — guitar heads, don't miss this. Go to to purchase tickets, which are $20 or $22.
