Everything's Coming up Roses

And carnations and tulips and hydrangeas...

If plants had feelings, flowers would probably be the most forgiving. We rip them petal from petal for our brides to trounce on, coerce the pretties to say our sorries for us, and snip the blooms off and make them live out the remainder of their short lives indoors under the glares of their terrible plastic imposters. And yet flowers blossom on. Indeed, it is a rare occasion that florals are lauded and celebrated on their own, and so the Saint Louis Art Museum in Forest Park sets aside a whole weekend each year to do just that. For this event, dubbed Art in Bloom, local florists and garden clubs garner inspiration from the museum's artworks and arrange our blossoming beauties. From Friday through Sunday (March 2 through 4), you can stroll through the galleries and take in the loveliness. Several flora-friendly activities are also planned. The Soup, Salad and Sandwich Buffet happens Friday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. ($19.95, reservations recommended), free docent-led tours also occur daily, lectures and dance performances are offered, and Flowers After Hours provides two free evenings of refreshments and music among the arrangements (Friday and Saturday from 5 to 9 p.m.).
