Faux Real

They're cops, they're buddies, they're fictional

In the '80s, the weekly adventures of detectives Jerome "Hooch" Hendrickson (Chris Anich) and David "Daddy-O" Mandlebaum (Jim Ousley) were ratings juggernauts in several countries. The program spawned a short-lived cartoon show and a breakfast cereal, as well as yearly conventions and fan gatherings that persist even today. And now that the network is reuniting the original cast for a TV movie, a documentary crew visits with the stars to discuss the incandescent ascent and eventual burnout of the comet that was Hooch & Daddy-O. Directed by Donna Northcott and written by Oscar Madrid, Ousley and Northcott, Hooch & Daddy-O skewers the crappiness of old cop shows and sends up the grating seriousness of VH1-style pop-culture anthropology. And it's seriously funny. Cinema St. Louis and Frontyard Features present a free outdoor screening of Hooch & Daddy-O at 9 p.m. at the Schlafly Tap Room (2100 Locust Street; 314-289-4150 or www.cinemastlouis.org).
