Fiddler on the Stage

It is a story as old as time; daughters helplessly fall in love while fathers hopelessly watch it all unfold. Which is why the heavy-hearted but delightful Fiddler on the Roof remains popular today. In it, the main character Tevye is the modest Russian milkman father of three daughters, who in turn each fall in love with a man of their own choosing that drives them further away from Dad and his Jewish traditions. Meanwhile, gossip of pogroms and the encroaching outside world befalls the villagers of Tsarist Anatevka, adding another layer of threatening change. The usual favorites "If I Were A Rich Man" and "Sunrise Sunset" as well as the rest of the song set are performed by veteran Fiddler star John Preece (and the rest of the talented cast). The show opens tonight at 8 p.m. at the Peabody Opera House (1400 Market Street, 314-622-5454, www.peabodyoperahouse.com) and runs through Sunday, April 8 (showtimes vary). Tickets range from $22 to $92 and can be purchased through the box office the day of the show, by phone at w-800-745-3000 or through www.ticketmaster.com.
