Put the "you" in "shush"

Jul 30, 2008 at 4:00 am
The flicker of fingers across a card catalog, the tap of a pencil eraser on a hardwood desk, the occasional "shhh!" of a cross librarian: These are the sounds we associate with the library, a building whose very design seems dedicated to the preservation and proliferation of silence. The St. Louis Public Library believes in turning this love of quietude on its ear during the monthly Not So Quiet! concert series, in which local groups perform at the library's Central branch (1301 Olive Street). Tonight at 7 p.m., enjoy the classic jazz stylings of the John Hartmann Group, a quartet that matches Hartmann's hollow-bodied guitar-work with upright bass, drums and tenor saxophone. Don't be afraid to let out a few hoots and hollers in appreciation of the musicians — the librarians will let it slide this time. Call 314-241-2288 or visit www.slpl.org for more information. Admission is free.
