Fire Bad

After his massive success in Universal Studio's 1931 smash Dracula, Bela Lugosi seemed a shoo-in to play the monster in the studio's next horror film Frankenstein, but makeup tests proved disastrous and Lugosi left the project, with the role ultimately going to Boris Karloff. Twelve years later, Lugosi would finally don the flattop and neck bolts to face off against Lon Chaney Jr. in Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man. Tonight at 8 p.m. highlights of both the original- and the Wolf Man-flavor F'stein films are screened during Super-8 Frankenstein Movie Madness at the Way-Out Club (2525 South Jefferson Avenue; 314-664-7638). These two classics have been chopped up into condensed fifteen-minute versions and will be stitched together mad-scientist style with the ookiest parts from Bride of Frankenstein, Son of Frankenstein, Ghost of Frankenstein, House of Frankenstein, plus 1957's I Was a Teenage Frankenstein. And for good measure, Toho's Godzilla-fied modern Prometheus Frankenstein Conquers the World is also on the bill. Admission is just $3,
