Fischerspooner

8 p.m. Thursday, May 14. The Pageant, 6161 Delmar Boulevard.

In hindsight, the idea that people once considered Fischerspooner an electroclash act is laughable. The proof is in enduring songs such as "Emerge," a stuttering early-'00s single full of sine-wave keyboards and Kraftwerkian robotics that remains a dance-floor surge even after repeated exposure. In fact, the NYC duo of Warren Fischer and Casey Spooner has always been a synthpop band with a penchant for flamboyant glam and performance art — even on 2002's #1, an album that arrived at the height of electroclash's trendiness. This futuristic playfulness returns on Fischerspooner's new album, Entertainment, a welcome comeback full of goth-pop squelches (the Faint-like "Infidels of the World Unite") and primitive, minimalist synthpop. Be sure to seek out its cover of an obscure R.E.M. song called "Fascinating" on Stereogum.com, too — Fischerspooner adds a ghostly sheen to the tune, much like it did on a sterling cover of Wire's "The 15th."
