Flora On the Moon?

From the outside, the red-and-white tent on the Powell Hall parking lot looks like -- well, a tent. It's attractive enough, as tents go. But inside that tent, that's where the magic is. The very air is different. It reeks of sawdust and daring. Has another year passed already? Apparently so, because Circus Flora -- which only blooms in June -- is back, eager as ever to beguile, delight and thrill. Although the temptation is to litter this column with high-flying nouns and bareback-riding adjectives, mere words never fully capture the heart-pounding wonders of St. Louis' very own circus. This year's edition is titled A Trip to the Moon, but as always, Circus Flora transports us beyond mere distance. Never matter how many times you've seen this circus in years past (and if you've never gone, what is wrong with you?), the mystical atmosphere inside the air-conditioned tent (bring a sweater) contains an exotic elixir that transports everyone, regardless of age, back to childhood. Circus Flora opens at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 30, and then continues to charm and dazzle Tuesday through Sunday through Sunday, June 23, at North Grand Boulevard and Samuel Shepard Drive (east of Powell Hall). Tickets are $10 to $48. Call 314-289-4040 or visit
Tuesdays-Sundays. Starts: May 30. Continues through June 23, 2013
