Free Comic Book Day is, as the name implies, the one day a year you can walk into participating comic-book stores and get free comic books. If you're not into comics, you soon will be if you go to Star Clipper's version of FCBD. The Loop staple does it up large this year with extra freebies, such as a signing by Brian Hurtt (illustrator of The Sixth Gun); costumed heroes roaming the store and the street; live pop-culture-themed music by groups including Superfun Yeah Yeah Rocketship, Little Big Bangs and 3 of 5; and a visit from Dr. Dan the Pancake Man. Kids younger than twelve who dress in costume will be entered in a drawing for a DK/LEGO prize pack, so bring 'em along. And then there are the comics: Hello Kitty, the Hip Hop Family Tree, a new Mouse Guard and a solo Rocket Raccoon adventure are just some of the titles available this year. Star Clipper's Free Comic Book Day lasts from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. The shop is located at 6392 Delmar Boulevard in University City. Call 314-725-9110 or visit for more information.
