Free, The Comics!

Every year on the first Saturday of May, the comic book industry gives away special introductory issues of their books for free. All you have to do is show up at the comic book store and take your pick. No retailer puts more effort into Free Comic Book Day than Star Clipper (6392 Delmar Boulevard, University City; www.starclipper.com), which goes all out with a souped-up, super-powered celebration like never before. The festivities begin Friday, May 3, with "Free Comic Book Eve," during which artist (and former St. Louisan) Jim Mahfood signs copies of his new book, Everybody Loves Tank Girl from 7 to 9 p.m. The kinda-cult classic, live-action film version of Tank Girl screens at midnight down the street at the Tivoli Theater (admission to the film is $8). At 10 a.m. Saturday, May 4, the free comics start flowing against a backdrop of live music and comedy, including performances by comedian Jeremy Essig, illphonics, Bruiser Queen, Superfun Yeah Yeah Rocketship and a set of video game covers from Brain Gang, featuring psych-post-punkers Spelling Bee. A host of local artists draw all day long and the fully-costumed "Gateway Super Friends" will keep the villains at bay and pose for pictures. Admission is free.
