From Russia, With Spiritual Love

Iconography in our time, as Andy Warhol so well understood, is represented through the uber-powerful imagery of advertising, entertainment, sports, and corporate and brand logos. Historically, iconography was the visual record of the Roman Catholic and Orthodox Churches and the decisive authority they once wielded. It’s difficult for us, from our 21st century perspective, to understand -- much less feel -- the emotional and spiritual power religious art exerted over so many people, paupers and kings alike, for so long. A new and exciting exhibit, Icons in Transformation, brings this centuries-old sensibility into contemporary focus. The exhibit, which is touring cathedrals across Europe and the U.S., includes traditional icons from Russian monasteries in tandem with modern interpretations of iconographic themes by Ludmila Pawlowska, a feted Russian-born abstract expressionist artist. Icons in Transformation opens with an artist reception at 5 p.m. Sunday, October 30, at Christ Church Cathedral (1210 Locust Street; 314-231-3454 or www.christchurchcathedral.us), with Ms. Pawlowska attending. The show remains open to the public through Sunday, January 15; regular hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday, with exceptions for holidays and special church services.
Sun., Oct. 30; Mondays-Saturdays; Mondays-Saturdays; Dec. 27-31; Jan. 8-15. Starts: Oct. 30. Continues through Dec. 24, 2011
