George Benson

Before George Benson became something of a pop star by singing "This Masquerade," he already had made his reputation as a versatile jazz guitarist, playing straight-up blues, bop and ballads in the chitlin' circuit combo of organist Jack McDuff and skillfully navigating his way through more elaborate arrangements in a series of slick recordings for the CTI label. Since his commercial breakthrough, Benson generally has tried to balance vocals and instrumentals. However, his latest album, Guitar Man, set for release next Tuesday, goes back to his roots, explicitly emphasizing Benson's considerable abilities as a jazz improviser and interpreter of melodies.
