Independent theater companies in St. Louis have a history of hovering just beneath the general public radar, churning out quality new work to small but excited audiences year after year. But things have changed recently. Besides an increase in regional and national press coverage, 2006 saw the introduction of the Kevin Kline Awards, which are bestowed upon the best in St. Louis theater. Winner of the 2006 KKA for Outstanding New Play or Musical, the Washington Avenue Players Project unleashes its new play, Ditto. Twins have a role in this sometimes-humorous work as do fate and astrology; throw in some damn good songs, and you have one hell of a night out. Directed by Todd Schaefer, Ditto runs every Thursday, Friday and Saturday from August 9 through 18 at 8 p.m. at the ArtLoft Theatre (1529 Washington Avenue). Tickets cost $15 and are available at the ArtLoft box office as well as through MetroTix (314-534-1111). For more information visit
Thursdays-Saturdays. Starts: Aug. 9. Continues through Aug. 18
