Gift of Gab

9 p.m. Saturday, July 10. The Old Rock House, 1200 South Seventh Street.

Whether part of the duo Blackalicious, his "supergroup" the Mighty Underdogs or on his own, California native Timothy Parker has always displayed the Gift of Gab. The complexity, verbosity and intelligibility of his rhymes — even at hyper-speed — put him on any shortlist of the game's top lyricists. As Gab tells author Paul Edwards in the essential new book How To Rap, "If the music takes me to a place where I feel it's appropriate to go on some superlyrical, ill-cadence-type stuff, that's where I'll go." He's gone there on two acclaimed solo albums, including 2009's Escape 2 Mars.
