Perhaps self-improvement items rest at the top of your resolution list. Or maybe you feel you're above such contrived means of betterment. It makes us no difference what camp you fall into (if either) because we'd like to propose a different way to enhance the new year: charity. While looking inward is good, peering out into the world is better, and that's just what the St. Louis Beacon does. The online nonprofit news source has our community in its sights, offering yet another way for involved citizens to stay informed. But, of course, all that work and all those words aren't free to write (though they are free to read), so the Beacon must raise funds like any other nonprofit organization. Thus, this evening's third annual St. Louis Beacon gala -- featuring a concert performance of The Mikado, Gilbert & Sullivan's beloved comic opera -- has a price tag of $60 to $75, but don't let that keep you away from the Sheldon Concert Hall (3648 Washington Boulevard). The evening begins with a reception at 5:30 p.m., complete with snacks and Champers, and the performance starts at 7 p.m. Surely, it will be a delight, and for those in the know, the lasting benefits of imagining Larry David's Curb Your Enthusiasm antics during "Three Little Maids from School" are not to be underestimated. But we digress ... To support the news source and start the new year off with generosity, purchase performance tickets by calling 314-534-1111 or visiting And note: There's a fancy-schmancy dinner after the show; visit for more on that.
