Gogol Bordello

8 p.m. Friday, August 6. The Pageant, 6161 Delmar Boulevard.

For a few years in the mid-'00s, the name Gogol Bordello was on the tip of everyone's tongue. Led by wildly charismatic (and wildly mustachioed) frontman Eugene Hütz, the self-labeled gypsy-punk band blew away festival audiences from Austin City Limits to Warped Tour — and earned some pretty famous fans along the way. (Madonna, anyone?) But then a strange thing happened: The band turned into the new Flaming Lips — y'know, a band known for its "totally killer" live show, but one with a catalog full of albums that deliver diminishing returns. Gogol Bordello is currently supporting its rather lackluster major-label debut, the Rick Rubin-produced Trans-Continental Hustle, which doesn't do much to distinguish itself from the band's previous four full-lengths. But, hey — at least its live show is still totally killer.
