Goodbye Berlin

In Berlin, the 1920s roared like nowhere else. Under the Weimar Republic, between the end of World War I and the rise of the Nazis, Germans partied hard, reveling in uncensored intellectual and cultural expression. The Tony Award winning musical Cabaret is set during the waning days of Weimar Berlin, with Hitler about to come to power; the city is living fast, knowing it will die young. The Kander & Ebb classic revolves around befuddled American writer Cliff, who dives headfirst into the hedonistic world of the Kit Kat Klub, where he falls in love with chanteuse Sally Bowles. But Sally's not the kind of girl you bring home to mama, and only Sally seems to be aware of that -- and that's not the only thing to which Cliff is oblivious. The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis opens its season with Cabaret. Performances take place Tuesday through Sunday (September 13 to October 6) on the Browning Mainstage at the Loretto-Hilton Center (130 Edgar Road, Webster Groves; 314-968-4925 or www.repstl.org).
