High School Face-Off

Those of us who love hockey the most have played it, too. We're not just Facebook gasbags, armchair defensemen, hat-trick hotshots in our heads (okay, yes we are -- only a little). As youth we regularly got out there on frozen ponds and/or any old patch of smooth concrete in order to mimic the glory of the pros on their big NHL rinks. But not all of us were lucky enough to play at the organized high school level, on official ice with real coaches and expensive equipment. If we had, it would've been a blast to compete in the Midstates High School Challenge Cup Tournament. This hockey marathon pits young area squads against each other in two separate brackets, with the ultimate winners -- either Wentzville Holt or Duchesne -- being determined tonight in the Wickenheiser Cup game at 5:30 p.m. and the Challenge Cup game at 8 p.m. All this wonderful weaving, checking, passing and wrist-shooting takes place on the fancy sheet of the Scottrade Center (1401 Clark Avenue; 314-622-5435 or www.scottradecenter.com). Tickets are $9. Visit www.midstateshockey.org for details.
