“Me -- I want a hula hoop.” So opined Alvin the Chipmunk in the 1958 ditty “Christmas, Don’t Be Late.” As it turns out, the song-loving rodent wasn’t the only one who liked hula-hooping; the beloved rings have enjoyed several spikes in popularity over the decades. Thanks to the work of groups like the St. Louis Hoop Club, new generations are being introduced to hula-hooping as a great form of exercise. Join the Hoop Club for the Second Annual World Hoop Day at the Missouri Botanical Garden (4344 Shaw Boulevard). From 1 to 4 p.m., see performances, participate in workshops (which are offered for both expert and novice hula-hoopers), watch art being created on-site and more. World Hoop Day’s mission is to provide hoops to children living in extreme poverty throughout the world – and, in doing so, to provide exercise and fun. The St. Louis Hoop Club will be collecting hoops for local schools, so please consider bringing one to donate. World Hoop Day is free with Garden admission ($4 to $8).
