Human Television

Look at Who You're Talking To (Gigantic)

You've heard everything on this record before, but probably not in one place. Human Television plunders the whole indie-pop canon for this comfortably familiar assemblage of twinkly ready-mades, sounding like nothing you'd expect to come from Florida (originally) or Philadelphia/NYC (currently). When the band swings from the minimal hush of "Untitled" to the sprightly summer splash of "Tonight's the Night," earnest pop students will hear bits of Down Under pop godfathers the Go-Betweens and the Clean, the K Records/Kill Rock Stars scene of the early '90s, and Joy Division and the Magnetic Fields. But don't get too wrapped up in that tired game of spot-the-influence, or you might miss a warm, infectious album that feels much fresher than it ought to. Standouts such as the gorgeous, desperate "In Front of the House" and the 93-second "Mars Red Rust" should be ringing from boomboxes from now until Labor Day.
