Hungary for Life

You may not know it, but your new favorite band is the Roby Lakatos Ensemble. A Hungarian Gypsy who plays the violin with unsurpassed passion and fluidity, Lakatos moves easily between the worlds of jazz, classical and Hungarian folk music. Lakatos' rendition of "Csárdás" begins with heartbreaking sorrow then explodes into a blood-roiling fury of perfectly intonated notes; life's mysteries, both sad and joyous, are expressed through Lakatos' fingers. And his ensemble is pretty hot as well. The Roby Lakatos Ensemble performs at 8 p.m. at the Touhill Performing Arts Center on the University of Missouri-St. Louis campus (1 University Drive at Natural Bridge Road; 314-516-4949 or www.touhill.org). Tickets are $25.
