Iguana Be Left Alone

Solitude, sex and cerveza

Broken by his desires, the once-Reverend Shannon has taken to leading budget bus tours through Mexico and drinking himself to quietude. He's recently deflowered another teenager (one of his charges) and has now detoured to the Hotel Costa Verde on the Pacific Coast for — what, exactly? The proprietor, Maxine, is a middle-aged carnal predator who sees in Shannon another good time, and she won't take "no" for an answer. Hannah, one of the other guests, is a wandering spinster-artist whose entire life has been a perpetual "no"; Shannon is drawn to her, and she draws something out of him. Damaged people, an overheated night and the lingering threat of sex — if those aren't the hallmarks of a Tennessee Williams play we'll eat an iguana. Speaking of which, the Muddy Waters Theatre Company presents The Night of the Iguana at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 2 and 7 p.m. Sunday (May 16 through 25) at the Gaslight Theatre (360 North Boyle Avenue 314-534-1111 or www.muddywaterstheatre.com). Tickets are $15 to $18.
Fridays-Sundays. Starts: May 16. Continues through May 25, 2008
