In the Galleries: Pills, Thrills and Bellyaches, closes February 2

Pills, Thrills and Bellyaches Sandra Marchewa, local artist and co-owner of Pace Framing/PSTL Gallery, has inscribed a lifetime on a small pane of Plexiglas. Composed of a dense gridwork of nail polish, glitter and marker-drawn circles, Marchewa's delicately maniacal piece has all the translucent luminosity of Gothic stained glass, in which the trials of a distinctly human inner narrative are chronicled. Peer closely and a catalogue of tiny icons appears: eyes, smiley faces, stars, tattoo-like floral patterns, a swastika, a clothes hanger, light bulbs, bugs, middle fingers, swirls, the words "PACE" and "ISO ROOM." Peace, love and punk angst collide in minute renderings wrought in dime-store media, their collective intricacy accumulating with such earnest intensity and laborious density that something strangely sublime results. Make sure to also peek behind the piece, which hovers a fraction of an inch off the wall. There, a diffuse polka-dotted grid of color glows like hidden treasure (or the private life itself). Through February 2 at Isolation Room/Gallery Kit, 5723 Dewey Avenue; 314-660-6295 or Hours: by appointment.
