When Incubus hit the national stage in the mid-'90s, the California quintet sounded like kissing cousins to Omaha's 311 — mainly because both bands shared a love of spacy grooves, loud guitars and turntable-based samples. Since the turn of the millennium, however, Incubus has pulled away from stoner rock and recorded increasingly nuanced, muscular albums that showcase singer Brandon Boyd's radio-ready pipes and exploratory songwriting. The 2003 addition of former Roots bassist Ben Kenney gave the band some extra thump and tightened up some of the loose funk of earlier releases. This year Incubus released Monuments and Melodies, a two-disc set of greatest hits and rarities (including a cover of Prince's "Let's Go Crazy"). The Duke Spirit, a British band that mixes shoegazey atmospherics with a relentless rhythm section, opens the show.
